Irish American Republicans endorse Doheny

Watertown banker and GOP candidate for New York's 23rd Congressional District Matt Doheny picked up another endorsement today.

His campaign spokesperson, Alison Power, called it "the best endorsement ever."

Here's the release:

The candidacy of Matt Doheny for New York's 23rd Congressional District seat has been endorsed by the Irish American Republicans, a coalition of Irish Americans founded in 1868 and dubbed by Sean Hannity "the GOP's Delta Force."

"The Irish American Republicans are calling upon all Irish Americans to support Matt Doheny, a true friend of Ireland. Matt Doheny will fight to cut the deficit, end out-of-control spending, repeal Obamacare and support a strong national defense." stated Grant Lally, national Co-Chair of the Irish American Republicans. Matt Doheny believes that people, not the government, are the foundation of our country."

The Irish American Republicans "support the principles of free markets, low taxes, limited government, individual liberty, and US support for Peace and Justice in Ireland," according to a press release on the endorsement.

"This election is too important for the future of our country. We need Matt Doheny in the US Congress,“ said Jeffrey Cleary, national Co-Chair of the Irish American Republicans. “Matt Doheny’s opponent is a big spending, high taxing supporter of the Obamacare/Pelosi/Reid policies that are failing our nation. The choice is clear: Matt Doheny for U.S. Congress.”

"I'm very grateful to the Irish American Republicans for this endorsement," Doheny said. "I not only share a heritage with the group, I share their belief in a federal government that spends less and taxes less."

According to the group's press release, "the Irish American Republicans are dedicated to building Republican support among the 45 million strong Irish American community, and have been a leading force in the national Republican coalition, since having been organized in 1868 and nationally chartered in 1880." 1. I suppose it's no problem for today's republicans, who like to rewrite history (especially recent history), but it's a hell of an irony that the Irish-American Republicans (I feel weird just saying that) were founded on the basic principles of pro-immigration and opposition to free trade.
