The former chairman of the New York State Republican Committee unofficially took the helm of the state Olympic Regional Development Authority’s Board of Directors today.
Pat Barrett sat in as chair of Tuesday’s regular ORDA meeting, replacing Joe Martens, who earlier this month was confirmed as the new commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Barrett worked for Cuomo during his gubernatorial campaign last year, and served as chair of the state Republican committee from 1989 to 1991.

ORDA worker injured at Whiteface Mountain
An employee of the state Olympic Regional Development Authority was injured earlier this week while performing maintenance on a ski lift at Whiteface Mountain.
ORDA spokesman Jon Lundin says the worker was attempting to restart the chair lift at Kids Kampus when the accident occurred at about 10:15 a.m. Monday.
According to reports, the lift had malfunctioned and crews were using a standby, auxiliary engine to help unload a pair of skiers and two instructors from the top of the lift.

ORDA worker hurt following lift malfunction...

ORDA spokesman Jon Lundin says an investigation into the incident is under way. He notes, however, that the malfunction was not caused by wind and the lift line and chairs were not in danger of falling to the ground.
The malfunction occurred on Lift I – the Freeway Lift – on Little Whiteface Mountain at 10:58 a.m. Wednesday. Lundin says 76 people were on the lift when the malfunction happened.

Senate sparring over ORDA continues, even if Assembly wants it funded
Senator Betty Little sent this letter to the Senate Democratic Conference today blasting them for proposing to zero ORDA's funding:

The Senate Democratic Conference one-house budget resolution’s elimination of the Olympic Regional Development Authority’s (ORDA) $6.6 million state appropriation has sent shock waves throughout the Adirondacks.
It is hard to believe such an ill-conceived proposal could make it into a budget resolution that is being described as a “road map” for the enacted state budget due April 1. A change of direction on this so-called budget road map is desperately needed now.
Without question, eliminating ORDA’s funding would economically devastate the North Country. Doing so would crush much of our tourism industry, upon which we rely very heavily. Hotels and motels would close. Restaurants and shops would close. Families would leave. I have no doubt the ripple effect would extend far and wide.

Did lawmakers watch the Olympics?
Following the announcement this week that the state Senate is proposing to slash $6.6 million from the Olympic Regional Development Authority, I'm wondering if Betty Little passed the word about our local Olympians along to her fellow lawmakers.
I know, I know. The economy sucks. The state's fiscal situation sucks. I get all that.
But in Buffalo, the state is about to spend $800,000 on two double-wides for conjugal visits. If the economic situation is so dire, why are we spending close to one million dollars for inmates to get it on?

Thefts at Whiteface, employee arrested in connection
We here at WNBZ have been receiving reports about the arrest of an ORDA employee for allegedly steeling a fairly large amount of skis, snowboards and related gear from patrons of the mountain.
The reports were at least partially confirmed today by ORDA spokesman John Lundin, who told me that there has been an arrest of an ORDA employee for the alleged acts of thievery.
At last check, the state police are remaining tight-lipped about the incident(s), citing an ongoing investigation.
Although we have received a few tips from anonymous sources about who the alleged equipment pilferer actually is, nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.
We will be sure to file a story as soon as more of the details are officially released.
