A young man from the Saranac Lake area is dead following an accident that occurred earlier this week.
Ray Brook-based state police say 19-year-old Casey McHugh of Lake Clear has succumbed to serious injuries sustained late Wednesday night following an accident in the town of Santa Clara.
Troopers received reports of a serious personal injury accident involving a golf cart and a skateboarder at approximately 10:25 Wednesday.
A subsequent investigation revealed that McHugh was riding his longboard on his back eastward along Hoel Pond Road when he entered the intersection of Floodwood Road and was struck by a golf cart operated by 43-year-old Bernard Farley of Saranac Lake.
McHugh was unconscious when troopers arrived at the scene and he was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. He was later airlifted to Fletcher Allen Healthcare Center in Burlington.
He was listed in critical condition until approximately noon Thursday. Troopers issued a press release at about 12:30 p.m. indicating McHugh had succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Farley fled the scene before troopers arrived – he was later located at his residence.
An investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing and Franklin County District Attorney Derek Champagne has been notified.
Police say charges are pending. Anyone with information pertaining to the accident is encouraged to contact state police at 897-2000.
