Rumors and speculation can finally be put to rest – Lake Placid is getting a Hannaford supermarket.
Officials announced Wednesday the chain has signed a lease agreement for a Hannaford store at the former Tops Market site in the Cold Brook Plaza.
According to a release issued by Hannaford spokesman Michael Norton, the store is slated to open in the spring of 2011. He notes the store will feature a butcher shop, baker, deli, produce and seafood departments, and a full-service pharmacy.
Norton notes the closet Hannaford is in Plattsburgh, a 45-minute plus drive from the Tri-Lakes area.
“We look forward to providing area residents and visitors with an easy-to-shop Hannaford supermarket that offers a range of fresh, high-quality foods at great value and a convenient pharmacy,” he said.
The Cold Brook Plaza location is 40,500 square feet in size and Norton expects to hire approximately 100 employees from surrounding communities.
Last year, Hannaford was named one of the nation’s 10 healthiest supermarkets by Health magazine.
Hannaford also has a reputation for environmental stewardship. Norton says the company’s August, Maine franchise is one of the world’s most environmentally advanced supermarkets.
Norton expects many of those principles will be applied at the Lake Placid stores. He says the company will utilize energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration systems.
“We’ll also emphasize recycling cardboard, plastic and other materials in our daily operations – as we do in every Hannaford location – to increase efficiency and lessen environmental impact,” Norton said.
Hannaford Supermarkets is based in Scarborough, Maine and operates 174 stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
